Chapter Twenty-One
Elena pushed open the door to the kitchen and smiled when she saw Eva waltz Zoe around the room. âZoe, thereâre two gentlemen at the door. I think itâs a little late for salesmen, but you might want to come out and see.â
Zoe hated to be intruded on in the evening. More and more salesmen were making evening calls, and more than one of them copped her ire.
âIâm going to complain to their head office,â she muttered as she followed Elena out the door.
Zoe padded her way to the door to find two men standing outside. One of the men was short with close-cropped brown hair and brown eyes. His black pinstriped suit looked quite severe for a young man. Adding to the look, he wore glasses with thick black frames. He held his brown briefcase in front of him like a shield, which was a little weird even for a salesman. His partner was blond with green eyes, and he was taller than his colleague. This man also wore a black suit, but with a red tie and no hat. Zoe didnât trust a man who wasnât courteous enough to wear a hat, strange as that seemed.
âHello. May we speak to Miss Muller?â the brown-haired man asked smiling.
Zoe stood still for a long moment with her hand on the doorknob. She had never seen two salesmen come to the door together. âHow do you know Iâm not Miss Muller?â
The brown-haired man looked at his partner, and then shifted his gaze back to Zoe. âWe know youâre not.â
Zoe smiled. âHow?â
âLook, Miss Lambrosââ
âHow do you know my name?â Zoe was taken aback at the recognition. She scowled at the two men. She knew salesmenâs tricks, but this one was a little too much.
âMaybe we should introduce ourselves,â the blond man murmured.
Zoe was on the verge of shutting the door in their faces when the brown-haired man said hastily, âMy name is Friedrich Jacobs, and this is my partner, David Harrison. Weâre from the War Crimes Unit.â
Zoeâs scowl turned into a delighted smile. âOh, wow, that was quick,â she told them. Over her shoulder, she called, âEvy, the Immigration people are here.â
âOn a Sunday?â Eva asked as she came up behind Zoe. âI thought I was supposed to come to you.â
The men exchanged glances. âWell, we thought it would be best if we came today,â Friedrich said.
âAll right then.â Eva shrugged. âIâm Eva Muller.â
âYes, we know,â David replied. He smiled charmingly as they were led inside.
âI think Iâd better get out of your hair,â Elena whispered to Zoe. âThe short one is cute,â she added, low enough for only Zoe to hear. Zoe nudged her with an elbow before giving her a hug and walking her to the door. She came back just as the two men sat down in the lounge.
âThis is my sister, Zoe,â Eva said.
âPleased to meet you and your sister.â
Alarm bells began jangling in Zoeâs mind. These men made her feel uneasy, and it wasnât just the fact they knew their names or were a little overly familiar.
